Jury Duty Information

The names of all licensed drivers and registered voters within each parish are placed into the Clerk of Court juror database in each parish. The jury commission uses the Clerk of Court juror database for random selection of the names of people who will receive a subpoena for jury duty.

Once you have been selected for jury service, you will receive a juror packet in the mail, from the Sheriff’s Office. This will consist of your juror summons, an instruction sheet, a questionnaire, and a return envelope. Please complete the questionnaire and return it to the Sheriff’s Office in the return envelope within five (5) days. If you have misplaced your paperwork, prior to returning the questionnaire form, please contact the Sheriff’s Office for another copy.

There are five qualifications that a potential juror must meet in order to serve on a jury.

1. Be a citizen of the United States and of Louisiana who has resided in the parish in which you are called to serve for at least one year immediately preceding your jury service.

2. Be at least eighteen years of age.

3. Be able to read, write, speak the English language and possess sufficient knowledge of the language.

4. Not be under interdiction or incapable of serving as a juror because of a mental or physical infirmity. (A written medical excuse from your doctor is required)

5. Not be under indictment for a felony, incarcerated under an order of imprisonment, or on probation or parole for a felony offense within the 5-year period immediately preceding the person's jury service.

If you do not meet these qualifications, please make sure you complete the questionnaire and return same in the self-addressed envelope to the Sheriff’s Office.

Along with the qualifications, there are three exemptions which may be claimed. You may claim an exemption if:

1. You have sat on a civil jury, criminal grand jury or criminal petit jury within the last two years of your reporting date.

2. Serving on the jury would result in an undue hardship or extreme inconvenience.

3. You are seventy years of age and older.

If you wish to claim one of these exemptions, please provide as much information as you can and attach it to the questionnaire form (Examples: letter from your doctor of any medical problems with diagnosis/condition included, letter from your employer if there is a hardship with your job or travel arrangement that would coincide with your jury service). The judge is the only person that may grant you an excuse from jury service. If you are given an excuse from jury service, the judge’s staff will notify you with a written notice. You must come to Court unless you get a written excuse from the judge or a telephone communication from the judge granting you an excuse.

A juror receives payment for their service. Payment is mailed to you via first class mail after service. Please bring your summons with you to Court.

NOTICE: NO CELL PHONES, I-PADS, RECORDING, OR OTHER ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES OR CAMERAS ARE ALLOWED ON COURTROOM. PROPER DRESS IS REQUIRED. NO SHORTS OR TANK TOPS, DRESS APPROPRIATELY.
